A riot broke out this afternoon in Jimeta, at the premises of the Jimeta Marshals, opposite the Jimeta Main market following thugs/motor tricycle riders clash. The cause of the riot as described by the interviewed persons claim the Jimeta Marshals were extorting funds of #1000 from the tricycle riders and market women who sell items by the roadside at random times, claiming it was for parking space yet they are never given any and demanded a halt to such activities.
The rioters started throwing stones and hurling insults at the Marshals and allegedly broke a car windshield during the act, The gate leading to the estate was shut immediately. See some photos after the cut...
The Commander of The Jimeta Marshals , Mr. Samule Ganapai said the situation was sad because the individuals took laws into their own hands. He said the the Marshals do not have jurisdiction to issue lands or parking space to anyone but to ensure free flow of traffic in the cosmopolitan.
He said the conflict arose out of ignorance of some individuals regarding certain dues being paid by the riders which the Transport Associations and Road Safety are aware of. He said the riders protested the payment saying if they were not allocated any space for parking they would cease the payment. He sited a case of lawlessness by the rioters who hurled stones even when the police came to intervene in the situation.
It took the combined efforts of the Nigerian Police, The Civil Defence and Nigerian army to calm the situation. It was also noticed that the Jimeta Marshals flag was hoisted at half mast as the crowd cheered.
Normancly has since been restored to the area ad market activities resumed

Delete"Riot" is to big a word to use in this volatile region. And fear spreads fast through the media such as this blog. In your bid to be news worthy be mindful of your pen flow. "almost a break in public order" wouldn't make ones heart skip faster than when he reads "Riot" in a boko haram region.
