Culled from Blueprint
Some Adamawa state workers have protested the deduction of N2, 000 from their May salaries.
The workers said they don’t know what the deduction was meant for and wanted explanation.
“N2, 000 is too much to be deducted without explanation, and that is why we need to be told why,” a worker who simply identified himself as Usman said.
When contacted, the state chairman of NLC, Comrade Dauda Maina, said he was aware of the development, adding that the deduction was for a modernised identity card, but that it was supposed to be N1, 500 and not N2, 000.
Dauda further explained that what was agreed with the consultant that would handle the ID card project was N1, 500, adding that communication gap between union representatives in the ministries with workers might have been the reason some workers were not aware of the deduction.
“The amount we agreed with the consultant for the ID card is N1, 500; so, we are going to verify if anybody is deducted beyond that,” he said.
He said the advantage of having a modernised ID card for all government workers was that ID cards issued by some ministries and departments were not recognise or respected by security operatives and banks if they workers wanted to open an account.
“Initially, we had wanted to do a customised ID card that would have one’s bank account which can be use to withdraw money but we abandoned that idea because of the cost.
“We settled for this one of N1, 500 that would at least contain vital information to help during staff validation and ease workers burden during such exercise.”
While reiterating the commitment of Organised Labour to workers welfare, Maina said the ID card project was in the best interest of the workers.
